Fuel tank monitoring

Combined ShapeCreated with Sketch.

As the fuel transactions become voluminous, manual handling and monitoring becomes very difficult and automation is needed. This is made possible by entrenched design, which is a combination of computer and mechanical systems.

In today’s world, it is very common to regulate devices by automation as it increases reliability and performance. Entrenched systems are based on Microcontrollers and their applications range from portable devices to large installations and can be extended to large composite systems. Particularly internal communications networks that are required for vehicle control such as assuring delivery of non-conflicting messages.

It is very regularly used in transportation in cases like fuel theft, premature dry out, fuel leakage, and improper fuel consumption and differences during the fueling of vehicle. These concerns cause a radical loss in the fuel level, which in turn causes the supervisor and authorities great distress.

Fuel theft is a major problem faced by owners and drivers that leads to financial loss.

The efficient monitoring and detection of fuel usage is made possible through improved logistics achieved by implementing the following:

  • A robust monitoring system based on the following ingredients:
  • Float Level Sensor’s principle
  • Information Retrieval techniques
  • Wireless Communication and Global Positioning System (GPRS)

EXISTING MONITORING SYSTEMS

There are many existing monitoring systems which can be reviewed to assess Bonus Buddy’s requirements and necessary modifications.

Design and Implementation of a New Nonradioactive-Based Machine for Detecting Oil-water Interfaces in Oil Tanks

An ultrasound-based technique is available to determine oil, emulsion and water level in the oil tank. It comprises a compact, programmable ultrasound-based multilayer level computing device for a feed-forward neural network (FFNN). It is a contactless distance measurement employing higher precision, lower cost, easier configuration and non-ionizing radiation is used. Further, a light-based method is its inconsiderateness to a dusty and smoky environment and the independence of the object material and surface.

Since all its circuits are arranged on the external side of the tank, the device can function in hazardous to clean or sterilized environments and cope with an exterior layer or soil mud. This system can work in remote areas independently over long periods where the environment (ie, temperature) varies within wide ranges.

Contactless Liquid-level Measurement Frequency-Modulated Millimeter Wave through Opaque Container

There exists a millimeter-wave Doppler sensor to detect target containers and measures the level of liquid based on the absorption of millimeter waves in the liquid. This method was introduced due to a challenge to accurately measure liquid levels (sub-millimeter error). A piezoelectric vibrator allows precise measurement through a limited spread of beam to reflect. The nonlinearity error is within 0.5 mm of the measured liquid level.

A capacitive sensor semi-cylindrical attached to a liquid container can quantify the liquid level without coming into contact with the liquid, however, its precision is not high.

Optical sensors like CCD cameras can compute fluid without the liquid by processing the image. However, to take an image of the external surface of the liquid, the container should be transparent, or the optical sensors must be placed in the container. The ultrasonic sensors can calculate the level in the area between the sensor and the liquid surface. Nevertheless, it cannot be used for sealed containers.

Embedded System of Wireless-Based Theft Monitoring

It is a wireless communication system with low cost, low power consumption and a low data rate based on the ZigBee design. The theft is identified and a notification is sent through GSM. At the same time, the camera captures the picture in real-time. The GSM based automation system detects the signal through sensors and sends the data to a particular mobile phone number. The video camera records the video all the time and transmits data via a wireless connection.
